Reading Questions for 3/15

Minimalist Tutoring- How can you measure the amount of tutoring that is required for a particular writer? Surely some writers respond differently to different techniques used in the writing center. How can a tutor tell how much of a push the writer needs in order to get engaged in a piece without imposing his/her own ideas?

Pure Tutoring- So, we agreed that too direct tutoring would overshadow the development of a writer's thoughts and ideas, but what are the pros to this kind of tutoring?

  1. In response to minimalist tutoring, I think by reading the writers paper a tutor can guess their skill level and therefore how much guidance they will need. Also, the point about body language is useful in telling if the writer is apathetic about their writing. If this is the case, a definite push would be necessary.

  2. In response to Minimalist Tutoring, I think its more helpful for the tutor to poke at the writers ideas and just keep asking questions rather than actually give the writer an idea. It may get annoying but at least you can feel you tried your hardest to give the writer the opportunity to actually come up with ideas.
